The Oklahoma City Planning Department, in partnership with the Oklahoma City-County Health Department and the city Office of Sustainability, conducted an HIA of “planokc,” a comprehensive plan consisting of eight major elements: future land use; transportation; environmental and natural resources; communities; preservation, appearance, and culture; parks and recreation; economic development; and public services. The HIA used these elements as health indicators in the analysis of three scenarios.
The HIA identified many opportunities in each scenario to improve health in Oklahoma City. Key components of all scenarios that would probably have positive impacts on the health of the community are: creating more opportunities for walking and biking; improving the availability of fresh produce; and increasing access to parks and schools.
