This resource explains why behavioral health is the most critical element for the next era in public health. This perspective is based on an increasing understanding of the role of toxic stress and trauma, in combination with genetic vulnerability, as antecedents to declining health and well-being. The resource contains a review of literature on the effects of stress and trauma on neural, endocrine and immunological systems and recommendations for addressing these effects.
